[Blaustein] John Scher was trying to paint this rosy picture
This is just fucking, I don't know, Lord of the Flies, man, I guess.
where people that would never do this in their normal everyday life,
and think that it's just the way it is.
Keep stepping up, guys. Keep it moving. Come on.
[Blaustein] It was complete freedom with no responsibility,
They treated people like dogs once they got their money. Dogs.
It was like a bomb going off in the middle of the festival grounds,
I don't think anybody had any money left over,
We'll see you again soon.
[laughs] It was the most amazing event.
Everyone, now move. Let's go.
that was the end.
I think the exterior wall just makes an amazing souvenir,
and, you know, have a family and stuff like that.
-[man] Right. -[Lewis] It's crazy out there.
Pull out. Let the state troopers handle it.
I saw a very small group of people.
But considering there were 200,000 people there, um…
and I look up, and it's a dude with a mask on.
By the time Jewel came on, the tone had definitely changed.
[crowd cheering]
"We didn't have a Woodstock."
[man, over radio] Everybody on stage, do you copy?
on TikTok and Snapchat and Instagram,
You know, they wanted more of anything,
and pull down their tent flaps in front of their stalls,
and Jewel fit that slot just perfectly.
with the big giant batons and the shields.
and we just have to get some of the more strident ones.
♪ Oh girl, let me slip it into your fire ♪
It's that idea that I'm better than you,
And there was an element that just was, you know.
[inhales deeply]
So we were like, "We gotta get that." So we're running over.
And John Scher just tells me to shut up and get off the channel.
and it wasn't just the overstimulated testosterone young males at this point.
We're happy. All is well. We haven't had any tough incidents.
[man] You can't stop fucking a riot in the '90s.
[crowd cheering]
[Speir] So we started getting calls over the radio
[reporter] Woodstock '99, goodbye, and maybe good riddance.
The joke was, you had taken everybody's flammable items for days,
Everybody is tired, wore out,
[crowd cheering]
and then the price gouging on top of that was ridiculous.
[Heather] The riots were the culmination of everybody being angry over the prices,
The entire planet now knew that it became a total and complete shit show.
